IN CASE OF EMERGENCY USE STAIRS: The State of the Phillies
by MattIn my 27 years of living, I have been alive for 2 world championships. When I was a few weeks away from my first birthday, the Sixers won the NBA title in 1983. When I was engaged for a mere 19 days, the Phillies won the MLB crown in 2008. That's it. All that time in between has seen some intense heartbreak for any die hard fan. When I mean die hard, I mean die hard. This post isn't meant for the fan who just started watching the Phillies since they won last year. This isn't meant for the fan that just waits till the playoffs to jump on board. This isn't meant for the person updating their Facebook every two minutes about how amazing the Phillies are but doesn't know what the Danny Tartabull debacle was. This is for the suffering fans who endured empty Vet seats, Scott Rolen's complaining about the turf, JD Drew and the batteries, Millwood, Bobby Abreu, Randy Wolf, Vincente Padilla, etc. If you fit the description above, click the X button in the upper right hand corner of your browser, log off, and put on some Dancing With The Stars in a dark corner.

What a joke
1993 Phillies:
Great Atlanta NLCS with all the drama and of course the heartbreak with Joe Carter.
1997 Flyers:
Amazing run to the cup only to have the Red Wings sweep us and Terry Murray say that we choked.
2001 Sixers:
Amazing run to the finals that saw two game 7s including Vince Carter's in and out 3 pointer at the buzzer. Game 1 of the finals was the highlight. After the Lakers were undefeated in the playoffs, AI over Tyrone Lue. That's all you gotta say here.
2004 Eagles:
Most dominating regular season of all time in Philly. T.O., the smiles, the mock fights, oxygen chambers, Chunky's vomiting.

McNabb still has puke on his chin..
So WHY have the Phillies/Rockies Game 3 and Game 4 felt like the most intense, nerve-wracking, do-or-die games I have ever seen?
As a fan of world champs, I should have more confidence this year. Unfortunately, it's the opposite. Now more than ever, my pessimistic levels are higher than ever. Winning a title is like a drug. Once you've had it, you NEED it again. If you are from Philly, you understand that it's more important this year for some reason, every Howard strikeout, every J-Roll at bat, Lidge blown save, Charlie's moves, Hamels bitchiness is magnified. This year more than ever, ALL the announcers and media are against us...even though we are defending champs.Last year we were undefeated at home. We had a 2-0 lead every series except in the World Series. Not this year. We were never 2 games away from being eliminated once last year. This year we were tied 1-1 after giving up that amazing home field advantage. Last year we had Brad Lidge. This year we have Brad Lidge. I can't explain it; this year's NLDS Game 3 and 4 have been the best, most nail-biting games of all time for Philly sports.

This was Brad Lidge

This IS Brad Lidge
Ryan Howard didn't arguably have the biggest at bat in his career last night - he flat out did. Think about it. Sure, he's had home runs in the World Series and key hits. However, he's never had a bigger hit in a clutch situation like that -- EVER.
Biggest career plate appearance
For the first time in our lifetimes, we are about to have a semi-final rematch. That's never happened ....especially back-to-back years.
In closing, I will leave you with this... even though our pinch hitting has been a no-show this post-season here is an awesome sign seen at Game 2 : In Case of Emergency Use Stairs. CLASSIC. I have a better one. In Case of Post-Season Use Jack.

I’m so glad you did this…
Last night, I watched every pitch from the 6th inning on…so many different states of emotion shot in and out of my mind.
When the score was 2-0:
“I think we’ll do this, but can Lee pitch the entire game?”
After the error from Utley to Rollins:
“Pathetic. I don’t know who’s fault it is. Utley had to deal with the Rockie jumping over his head, but instincts tell me he should have just thrown it to first. …..Maybe Charlie can get an interference…..ahh, no way. That was amazing, he jumped over him, and Utley made a bad decision and throw. It’s getting messy, now.”
When it was 2-4:
“Should have left Lee in. Madsen sucks. That error is going to cost us the game. Rockies have so many guys that can hurt you. I HATE Rockies fans. Damn, Game 5 it is.”
When it was 4-2, Top 9th and Rollins was up:
“OK, there is no way we will win. Now we have to head back home, and Hamels has to face this team he’s never had success against. Now I’m worried. Lee was supposed to pitch another gem, and we were supposed to move on, now we have to play them again with wishy-washy Hamels on the hill. Not good. Just strike out, Jimmy. Please end it now so I can move on.”
Jimmy hits the single:
“Whatever. It’s still over.”
Victorino gets on, Jimmy out at second:
“Stop it. Oh wow, two basically in-field singles, and now there are two outs. I really hate that they are attempting to give me false hope. It’s still over. Chase, just ground out like i know you will.”
After Chase walks:
“OK, are you kidding me? A stupid walk to prolong this pain I am going through!? Chase, we all know you have the best eye in the game, but what is the point??……Hmmm, Howard is up, though. A homerun would give us the lead….STOP IT! Why am I doing that to myself!?!? It’s over. We all know Howard will swing and miss at a low and outside crapper!”
As Howard hits the double and Utley and Victorino basically slide into home at the same time:
(I am jumping up and down in my family room, waking Renee up in the process, in front of my TV) “YES!!! YES!! YES!!! GO GO GO!!! Slide, you idiots!!!! Oh my God I can;t believe it!!!!”
I then recapped the last half hour to Renee who had fallen asleep, in full Jon-standing up, yelling, with many hand motions, fashion.
I couldn’t believe it. I have NEVER seen anything like this before… 2 outs, in the top of the ninth, in FREEZING Colorado, Howard hits a game tying double!?!?! That doesn’t happen for the Phillies. It was like…….Oh that’s right, it was like nothing we’ve ever seen before. A come back clutch double in the 9th with two outs, by our RBI machine, in the playoffs!!! We’re not used to this.
Then I began to think, only for a second:
Wow. Well, I know we won’t take the lead….this is going extra innings…
Then Jayson Werth did what he’s been doing since the all-star break: Coming through.
Bring on those stupid Dodgers, and that has-been Manny Ramirez.

Don’t forget it was two strikes on Howard as well…..
Jim Tracy after the game:
“Obviously we were a strike away from making a trip to Philadelphia, and who knows where from there, if we had been fortunate enough to get through Game 5,” Tracy said. “But it didn’t happen.
“We got beat by the defending world champions, and they did it in a fashion that, in my opinion, strongly suggests why they are the defending world champions.”
